We were lucky to catch up with Ming Wang recently and have shared our conversation below.
As depicted in the film “Sight” (angel.com/sight, based on my autobiography “From Darkness to Sight”), I was doing research to reduce corneal scar in my blind orphan child Kajal. I wanted to do research on fetus (who does not scar) but I also want to protect life. I got stuck. They say there is no common ground between faith and science. Is that really true? I prayed to God, asking if there is a common ground between faith and science. I was working with other scientists at the time, and felt that God was pointing us to use the placenta and amniotic sac (which used to surround all of us before birth) thinking that amniotic membrane could contain the secret of fetal scarless healing. I developed amniotic membrane contact lens and got the U.S. patents. When I put the amniotic membrane contact lens onto injured eyes, indeed miracle happened: scar is much reduced and eyesight restored. I then recognized that I really develop the amniotic membrane contact lens, since I did not invent the placenta, and nor amniotic membrane. God it. He has given me a precious opportunity to get a glimpse of part of His original creation. The credit goes to Him. I decided to donate the amniotic membrane contact lens technology to the world by putting the patent online and went to many different countries and pro bono taught over 10,000 eye doctors how to use the technology. Today, amniotic membrane contact lens technology is a $5 billion dollar industry. Doctors from nearly every nation are using it and millions of patients have had eyesight restored. The film “Sight” (angel.com/sight) is about the story of invention of this remarkable technology that has transformed the world. Even though in the process, I did make a cent, I feel that God is really the one who has invented it. I have just discovered a part of His original creation. The credit goes to Him!
‘Sight,’—starring Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning Greg Kinnear, and Terry Chen (Almost Famous, Falling) is based on the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, a poor Chinese immigrant who defies all odds to become a world-renowned eye surgeon in the United States. Set in 1970s rural China, a young Ming faces persecution and despair at every turn; but with the support of his dedicated family and his own unwavering determination, he finds his way to America, attends Harvard and MIT, and helps develop an innovative technology that restores sight in millions. Taking on the seemingly impossible challenge of helping a blind orphan, the resilient Dr. Wang must reconcile with his own traumatic past and face the harsh reality that the strength of his own will can only go so far.
